EDITORIAL REVIEWS
LITZIE'S SECOND RECORDING IS RIGHT ON THE MARK.MEMORABLE MELODIES, STRONG, INFECTIOUS GROOVES IN A VERY WELL DONE JAZZ TRIO SETTING.
GENRE: Jazz/Piano Trio
COMPOSERS: Darren Litzie, Thelonius Monk, Rod Argent, Karl Suessdorf, John Blackburn
On Litzie's second recording, prepare for more catchy, infectious music.very well done! .
The title track, "On My Own Time," is based on a groove from Brazil that Litzie has always liked called
a Baião. There's a real intensity and excitement with this.
For his arrangement of the standard "Moonlight in Vermont," he offers up a bit darker and more melancholy version.
An original, "Just After Three," is a fairly simple waltz with plenty of open space for the trio to fill.
"Maybe We'll Try" is based on another groove from Brazil - the Samba.
"If Only I Could Forget" features a Country/R&B-inspired 12/8 groove at a slow tempo.
Darren initially envisioned "Busy Work" as a 12-bar blues, but it felt a bit too conventional. He was very happy with the result.
"Before Tomorrow" features a feel that Litzie always enjoy playing.medium-up tempo swing.
"A Short Walk from Here" is a playful original with an unexpected rhythmic twist in the second half.
For his take on Monk's "In Walked Bud," he arranged it with a funk groove in seven, added a countermelody, and modulated up a whole step on each 'A' section.
For the final track on the record, Litzie wanted to do something a little outside the box and eventually settled on The Zombies' "Time of the Season". You'll enjoy this jazz version.
Pianist/Composer Darren Litzie has a solid history. Darren has studied, performed and recorded with many world-renowned artists. From 2009-2010, Darren was the touring keyboardist for singer Andrew Strong of the band/1991 film The Commitments.
An avid composer and arranger, Darren completed a three-year stint as a member of New York's prestigious BMI Jazz Composers Workshop, where he had several of his works premiered in concert by the BMI Jazz Orchestra.
