III

After two albums entirely focused on the dreamy purity of melodies played alone on the piano, Alban Claudin opens his music to new horizons. With III, the composer hems his short pieces of arrangements for strings, winds or organ, brushing delicately contrasting landscapes, preserved from the crashes of the world. Concise and appealing, in turn minimalist or more densely romantic, his compositions form an ambitious album – a full expression of an artist in motion. The piano is still at the heart of these delicate and organic architectures but often dialogue with other instruments – saxophone, bass clarinet, violin, cello, organ – whose presence the composer dreamed of early on and wrote the arrangements alone. Always guided by pure and agile melodies, his pieces are illuminated differently and III captures by his art of contrast, the precision of its line, the richness of its colors. Alban Claudin engages in it small rectilinear races inherited from minimalists (The Run, piano strings struck in rhythm and cavalcade of winds; L'escapée, organ, ebb and ebb of strings; L'Île, piano and light electronic processing) as romantic escapes (the almost waltz of Love or Origami, unfolded into a moving abundance of strings). Some very short pieces capture a moment apart, floating, like this Phantasia whose dense and undulating melody eventually vanishes into a brief maze of strange sounds. Because Alban Claudin's sense of melody and the science of arrangements meet throughout the record a pointillistic and bold work on sound textures, which makes it both homogeneous and singular. III is the radiant and intense work of a composer who has chosen to invent the path he takes following his intuitions. Born from a tension between the taste for movement and the call for calm, the rumbling of torment and the search for inner fullness, the 13 pieces that make up the album house places, emotions and feelings, and will themselves be refuges for anyone who abandons themselves.
